The History Of The Mint Julep. The origins of the Mint Julep did not begin at Churchill Downs. Although it is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby (since 1939), and horse racing in general.
The Gulab was a mixture of water and rose petals in the Middle East. It was used as bathwater by nobility and for medicinal purposes. This spread to the Mediterranean where the rose petals were replaced with bountiful mint leaves and the concoction was known as Julab.
In the 1800’s the drink reached America. The high British taxes on rum and brandy after the Revolution caused Americans to substitute those spirits with our own bourbon. The stablemasters would take a shot of whiskey as an “eye opener” in the morning and bourbon became popular around stables and race tracks.
