The State Fair Of Texas 2025

The State Fair Of Texas 2025The State Fair of Texas 2025: A Tradition of Culture, Community, and Commerce

The State Fair of Texas, held annually at Fair Park in Dallas, is one of the largest and longest-running fairs in the United States. Established in 1886, it has grown into a beloved Texas tradition that spans 24 days, drawing over 2 million visitors each year. More than just a fair, it is a celebration of the state’s rich culture, agricultural heritage, and innovation.

Running from late September through mid-October, the fair showcases a wide array of attractions. From livestock competitions and college football games to art exhibitions and culinary contests, the event highlights the diverse talents and interests of Texans. Iconic features like Big Tex — the 55-foot-tall cowboy mascot — and the annual Red River Showdown football game between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma are staples that continue to draw crowds.

The fair also plays a significant role in the local economy. According to recent estimates, it contributes over $400 million annually to the Dallas economy, supporting hundreds of jobs and promoting small businesses and local artisans. Its commitment to education and community outreach is also notable, with the State Fair of Texas Foundation awarding more than $1 million in scholarships annually to students from underserved communities.

In addition to entertainment and economic impact, the fair is known for its culinary creativity. Each year, food vendors compete in the Big Tex Choice Awards, where deep-fried and uniquely Texan dishes make national headlines.

As it continues to evolve, the State Fair of Texas remains a symbol of community pride, bringing people together from across the state and beyond. It is more than a fair — it is a reflection of Texas itself: big, bold, and deeply rooted in tradition.  This years Fair runs Sept. 26th to October 19th.

Fun fact:  In 1987 Texas Associate Broker Debbie Murray at Allie Beth Allman & Associates won a Blue Ribbon in the Creative Arts Holiday Corner Original category at the State Fair for an original (no kit) felt and beaded holiday stocking.

The History Of Labor Day

The History Of Labor DayThe History Of Labor Day.  Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September in the United States, honors the contributions and achievements of American workers. Its roots trace back to the late 19th century, a time of rapid industrialization, when laborers often faced harsh working conditions, long hours, and minimal pay. In response, labor unions formed to advocate for better treatment, fair wages, and safer workplaces.

The idea for a national holiday to recognize workers is credited to either Peter J. McGuire, co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, or Matthew Maguire, a machinist and union leader. The first official Labor Day celebration took place on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union. Thousands of workers marched in a parade and participated in picnics and speeches.

Momentum grew as more states adopted the holiday. Following the violent Pullman Strike in 1894, where federal troops were deployed against railway workers, President Grover Cleveland signed Labor Day into law to promote reconciliation with the labor movement. Since then, Labor Day has evolved into a nationwide celebration, often marking the end of summer with parades, barbecues, and retail sales, while still serving as a reminder of workers’ vital role in building the nation.
