Happy 4th Of July

Happy 4th Of JulyPer Wikipedia:

Independence Day, known colloquially as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States which commemorates the ratification of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.

The Founding Father delegates of the Second Continental Congress declared that the Thirteen Colonies were no longer subject (and subordinate) to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states.[1] The Congress voted to approve independence by passing the Lee Resolution on July 2 and adopted the Declaration of Independence two days later, on July 4.[1]

Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts,[2] baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.[3][4][5]

The History Of The Mint Julep

The History Of The Mint JulepThe History Of The Mint Julep.  The origins of the Mint Julep did not begin at Churchill Downs.  Although it is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby (since 1939), and horse racing in general.

The Gulab was a mixture of water and rose petals in the Middle East.  It was used as bathwater by nobility and for medicinal purposes.  This spread to the Mediterranean where the rose petals were replaced with bountiful mint leaves and the concoction was known as Julab.

In the 1800’s the drink reached America.  The high British taxes on rum and brandy after the Revolution caused Americans to substitute those spirits with our own bourbon.  The stablemasters would take a shot of whiskey as an “eye opener” in the morning and bourbon became popular around stables and race tracks.  Read more about the history of the Mint Julep here:  https://www.abcfws.com/a-guide-to-mint-juleps-for-derby-day

The 2024 Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, May 4th at 6 PM.

Preserving Hydrangea Color In Dallas TX

Preserving Hydrangea Color In Dallas TXPreserving Hydrangea Color In Dallas TX.

Hydrangeas are cherished for their vibrant blooms, and in Dallas, Texas, these gorgeous flowers can bring a burst of color to gardens. However, the climate in Dallas, characterized by hot summers and relatively mild winters, can sometimes lead to color changes in hydrangeas. Here are some tips to help keep your Dallas hydrangeas looking their best.

  1. Choose the Right Variety: Select hydrangea varieties that are better suited to the Dallas climate. While all hydrangeas may change color due to environmental factors, certain varieties, such as the Endless Summer series, are more likely to maintain their color in warm climates.
  2. Proper Soil pH: Soil acidity plays a significant role in hydrangea color. To maintain blue blooms, ensure the soil pH is acidic (around 5.5). For pink blooms, slightly alkaline soil (pH above 6.0) is preferable. Regularly test the soil pH and amend as necessary using products specifically designed for altering pH levels.
  3. Mulching: Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the base of the hydrangeas to help regulate soil temperature and moisture levels. Mulch also helps to prevent rapid fluctuations in soil pH, which can influence flower color.
  4. Watering: Hydrangeas require consistent moisture, especially during hot Dallas summers. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth and prevent stress-induced color changes. Avoid overhead watering, as this can lead to fungal issues and disrupt flower coloration.
  5. Shade and Protection: Provide afternoon shade to hydrangeas to shield them from the intense Texas sun, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Consider planting them near taller plants or structures to provide natural shade. Additionally, during unusually hot spells, consider using shade cloth or umbrellas to protect the plants from excessive heat.
  6. Pruning: Limit pruning to remove dead or damaged wood and shape the plant. Avoid heavy pruning, especially in late summer or fall, as this can remove flower buds for the following season.

By following these tips, you can help maintain the vibrant colors of your hydrangeas in Dallas, Texas, ensuring a stunning display of blooms throughout the growing season. With proper care, your hydrangeas will thrive and continue to delight for years to come.

Spring Yard Clean-Up

Spring Yard Clean-UpSpring Yard Clean-Up

As winter melts away and the promise of spring beckons, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and embark on the annual tradition of spring yard clean-up. This essential task not only rejuvenates our outdoor spaces but also sets the stage for a season of growth and enjoyment. Here’s a comprehensive guide to tackling spring yard clean-up effectively:

  1. Assess the Damage: Begin by surveying your yard to assess the damage inflicted by winter. Look for fallen branches, debris, and any signs of damage to plants, fences, or structures.
  2. Clear Debris: Remove fallen leaves, branches, and other debris that have accumulated over the winter months. This not only tidies up the yard but also prevents potential hazards and allows for better airflow and sunlight.
  3. Prune and Trim: Trim back overgrown shrubs and trees, removing dead or damaged branches to encourage healthy growth. This is also the perfect time to shape hedges and bushes for a tidy appearance.
  4. Prep the Lawn: Rake away any thatch or dead grass to promote healthy lawn growth. Aeration can also help improve soil drainage and promote stronger root systems.
  5. Address Garden Beds: Clear away old foliage and weeds from garden beds to make way for new plantings. Add compost or mulch to nourish the soil and suppress weed growth.
  6. Inspect Irrigation Systems: Check sprinklers and irrigation systems for leaks, clogs, or damage. Ensure that they are in proper working order to support healthy plant growth throughout the season.
  7. Fertilize and Seed: Apply a slow-release fertilizer to nourish your lawn and plants, promoting lush growth. Overseed thin or bare patches in the lawn to encourage a dense, green carpet of grass.
  8. Clean Outdoor Furniture and Structures: Dust off outdoor furniture, clean patio surfaces, and inspect fences, decks, and other structures for signs of wear or damage. Make any necessary repairs or updates to ensure they’re ready for use.
  9. Plan for Plantings: Take stock of your garden and make plans for new plantings or landscaping projects. Consider adding colorful annuals, perennial flowers, or fresh herbs to enhance your outdoor space.
  10. Celebrate the Season: Finally, take a moment to appreciate the beauty of your refreshed yard and the promise of new growth that spring brings. Invite friends and family to enjoy the outdoors with you, whether it’s a leisurely afternoon in the garden or a festive barbecue on the patio.

By following these steps, you can tackle spring yard clean-up efficiently and effectively, setting the stage for a season of outdoor enjoyment and relaxation.
